At West Coast English, I want you to improve your English while enjoying yourself, because I believe that stress actually inhibits learning, and real progress happens when students are fully engaged and enjoying themselves. This is why I chose the name West Coast English – on the west coast of California, things are more relaxed and laid-back. But did you know that California is the world’s 5th largest economy? It’s because on the west coast, people love what they do, and this is the spirit I bring into everything I do at West Coast English.

Meet Mary mckinley
The founder of West Coast English
From San Diego to Bern
I grew up in Southern California and earned my Bachelor’s at the University of California, San Diego, where I also started her career as a teacher in 2001. After graduating, I spent three years in the UK, and earned my CELTA teaching certificate in Cambridge, England. From there I moved to Bern, Switzerland, where I have lived and worked as an English teacher since 2006 (with a break of one year when I taught English in Paris, but, believe me, I was very glad to return to Bern).
A Passion for Teaching
I’m an experienced English teacher and believe teaching English involves much more than just grammar: students learn English to communicate, and that is my goal with every lesson. And English isn’t just one language, either; they say England and America are two countries divided by a common language, and I help my clients navigate the differences between the dialects of English as well as the many cultural differences.
A Passion for Writing
Reading is my passion and hobby, and my goal is that every client has written documents that are perfect. What good is writing something if the readers can’t understand it or connect with it? That is why, when a client has me edit or write content, the result is always exactly right for the topic and the target reader. The key to my success as an editor, writer and teacher is my skill in listening to my clients, my flexibility, and, most importantly, my passion for my work.
